On the Town un film de Stanley Donen & Gene Kelly - Retrospective

TSPDT Greatest Films #515 On the Town (Stanley Donen & Gene Kelly, 1949)
On my quest to see the 1000 Greatest Films of all time from They Shoot Pictures Don't They? I have the luck to have a television channel (Cine Pop) that presents classic films from the 40's to this day. This morning was the presentation of one of the best technicolor musicals of the 40's; Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly's On the Town. The story is very simple, three sailors have a 24 hour permission in New York City. One of them wants to see all the landmarks (Sinatra), the other wants to meet a girl (Kelly) (well the three of them ends with a girl, please don't act surprised here!) and the last one just want ot have fun (Munshin).
A predecessor to their 1952 masterpiece Singin' In The Rain, this one is entertainning as well and very well choregraphed too. But it doesn't have the depths we can find in the story of Singin'In The Rain. Some scenes are written to present the wonderful dances by Kelly and the numerous girls of the film. The funny side is more present here too. The dance in the Natural Museum is hilarious and has a cartoonish look.
I think the thing that bothered me the most was the precipitated ending and that some gags don't hold up enough for the quality of the feature. For an musical comedy fans this is a Highly Recommended film and I personnally would recommend it to anyone who appreciate a classic entertainment of the 40's.

Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice un film de Yasujiro Ozu - Retrospective

Ozu's films are often categorized in periods or chapters of his filmography (Early or Silent films Late Ozu or Materpiece period). The Flavor of Green Tea over Rice of 1952 can be categorized as one of his later masterpieces. Just before his main film Tokyo Story (1953) and after Early Summer (1951). Being the fourth film I've seen from him this is made the one I appreciated the most. Why? I think it may not be that far better than Tokyo Story, Late Spring, or Early Summer but I think this is a director which the most films you see of him the more you appreciate his style, his vision, his storytelling, and his directing qualities.

The more japanese of japanese directors always been frown upon and snobbed for his two main contemporaries Akira Kurosawa and Kenji Mizoguchi. They were always the representants of Japan in Cannes and in the international festivals. Like many artists sadly, it's after his death he becma to be habilited into world Cinema and regarded as one of the main figures of his art. The stories depicted in his films are common and regular issues of normal japanese people, with contemporary stories, without swordsmen/samurais, without spectacular scenes or events, and during the little moments of our lives.

His style, with a low camera and few movements of it is very contemplative. He is, of the three main japanese directors of his period the closest to documentary style and natural life emotions.

In The Flavor of Green Tea over Rice one of his recurring theme is used to illustrate the main story of his film; food. When the husband illustrate to his wife how he sees life and happiness through simple food and he compares them together to green tea penetrating the rice to make a dish that he finds really good it makes the best scene of the film. Without being spectacular or too emotive it's a magical moment made by Ozu here. It's a simple story about simple people not too dramatic or comical but just the right touch to it to make it a comedy of manners signed Ozu. Visually it's a stunning film with few movements of camera that accentuate the scenes and the nice rythm of the film.

It's weird but also I think it's there, it has a touch of a feel good movie where at the end every piece falls into it's right place.

Visite à la Cinémathèque québécoise

For my day job (Archivist) I had the chance to work at the Cinémathèque québécoise. A place I am ashamed to say, I had never visited before. There is an exhibition of pictures taken during the production of many films made by Quebec's finest directors. Curently, there's a free projection of a hommage made to Alfred Hitchcock with professionnal imitators and filmed with all his own directing style.
As an Archivist, I could take and dip into the Cinémathèque's Archives to discover many boxes with the names of Michel Brault, Pierre Perrault, Claude Jutra, etc. Well, if I only had the chance to open those boxes and go through these documents I'm sure there are many treasures in there.
If I were living in Montréal I would certainly be a member of the Cinémathèque because their programmation is very interesting and there's a good variety of films shown. Presently there's a Glauber Rocha retrospective running on.
I recommand a visit at the Cinémathèque québécoise to anyone interested by the 7th art for his expositions on the history of television and Cinema but also for his awesome programmation.

Howard Hawks' Scarface (1932) The original Scarface that shows all of Hawks directing skills. This is one of the most violent gangster films ever made by Hollywood.

Up de Pete Docter 8.6 / 10

The Limits of Control un film de Jim Jarmusch

The Limits of Control de Jim Jarmusch 8.9/10

Sullivan's Travels - Mini-Review

TSPDT Greatest Films #128 Sullivan's Travels (Preston Sturges, 1941)

After having seen Preston Sturges' The Lady Eve that he made the same year, 1941, I was charmed by his slapstick comedy, his style, his dialogues, and the accessibility of his films. In Sullivan's Travels Joel McCrea plays a director who's tired of making the same old films and he wants to make the story of a hobo. So he tries to live like a hobo and in his journey he finds what the real people like to see in the theater. He also finds a girl, "There's always a girl in the story!".

Well, compared to The Lady Eve, Sullivan's Travels is a little bit inferior, but still very good and it takes a spot on my Top 10 of the year 1941.

Ma Nuit chez Maud de Eric Rohmer - Retrospective

TSPDT Greatest Films #282 Ma Nuit chez Maud (Éric Rohmer, 1969)

To pay a tribute to one of the most important figures of the French New Wave and of the French film history, Eric Rohmer who just past away this week I choose to discover and analyze one of his better works; Ma Nuit chez Maud (1969). Being the third chapter of his six moral tales, Maude's is for many his best film. I'm ashamed to say that before saturday January 16 2010 I haven't seen one of his films. This short essay will try to pay tribute and erase my lack knowledge about Rohmer's films.

Ma Nuit chez Maude starts with the main character, Jean-Louis, played by Jean-Louis Trintignant as a 34 years old engineer converted to catholicism who believes in true love. He will confront his ideas with one of his best friends Vidal and the newly encountered Maude (who are by the way atheists) about their visions on life, love, friendship, Pascal, and marriage. In the beginning, Jean-Louis says he's gonna marry Françoise but slowly falls in love with Maude and her straightforward attitude.

The narrative of the film stands close to Antonioni's style, who is a big influence on Rohmer's films, with clean and shaky black and white images, long takes; especially with the openning sequence which is silent for nearly five minutes. The scenes are long and the characters slowly enter and exit the image. This is clearly a French New Wave film but many aspects of it are taken from the Italian Neorealism especially. Rohmer tried to minimize the narrative effects on his story to take his Film as near as possible to reality. That's something, the Italian Neorealists wanted to do, especially Antonioni and Rossellini. On the other hand, Rohmer was openly a supporter of the work of Hitchcock and Hawks as the other directors of the French New Wave. Some narrative elements of Ma Nuit chez Maude are directly taken from those two masters who never hesitated to insert long silent sequences into their films. The esthetic and the camera angles are clearly influenced by the films of Alfred Hitchcock. The story of the film may seem a little flaw with its slow rythm but when it all comes into place it fits perfectly. I think it may have influenced Sofia Coppola on her Lost in Translation.

I didn't really got into Ma Nuit chez Maud in the first place. But after a little refexion and some time I think it's a very deep film that enters your mind and works on it. In this case, I think it's a great movie especially when afterward it continues to grow within you. I'm proud of letting myself immerge into Eric Rohmer's filmography.

Reposez en paix Monsieur Rohmer!

Up in the Air un film de Jason Reitman

From the director of Juno and Thank You for Smoking, Jason Reitman son of Ivan, presents a sometimes romantic / sometimes drama / sometimes comedy / sometimes off-beat film of a man Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) who's job is his perfect life; he is hired by companies to fire people all around America. He loves to travel and he loves the fact that he has no strings attached anywhere. Until, his dreamjob meets technology and new advancements. Well, I don't want to ruin any punch to anyone, so my summary will end here. I think it's a very good story.

I enjoyed Juno and all its teenage goofyness melancholy and I haven't seen Thank You for Smoking yet. But, I had many problems with Up in the Air that doesn't seem to fit into comedy or drama or romantic comedy. I don't need a film to be defined as clear as black and white but sometimes the situations don't fit into any genre and some scenes go everywhere. On the other side I disliked the fact that they had to put scenes of interviews with people who had been fired who express their feelings and their motivations to make the film more human. It's a cold film and the color I could put on that movie is definitly Grey. Like Bingham's apartment, it has no personnality and you don't want to stay there.

Anyway, the film is off-beat but it's not like if you're stuck in a traffic jam, it flows right and the rythm is good. I really liked the story but in my opinion, it was not well exploited. The first act goes really well but after I think some strings are messed up big time. For this reason I think it's the kind of movie you like when just watched it. And then, five years later you don't really need to see it again and you don't really want to either.

R.I.P. Eric Rohmer

"This is according to his producer, who told AFP and French 24. The arthouse French filmmaker, screenwriter, and film critic (who was born Maurice Scherer), was 89. One of the key figures of the post-war New Wave cinema movement and an articulate and literate devotee of purism in the moviemaking, Rohmer made 24 films over a period of 50 years. His main works include his cycle of films Six Moral Tales: shot in 1969, the third in the series, Ma Nuit Chez Maud, brought him international recognition."

Eric Rohmer a director I must say I have never seen a single movie of the 24 he has made... I'll correct that as soon as I can put my hands on his films any suggestions with which one of his films I should start?

Easy Riders, Raging Bulls by Peter Biskind.

This book about the industry of Hollywood Cinema during the 70's (one of my favourite decade in Cinema history) is a witness of the exceses and the succeses of the filmakers of that time. This essay is interesting and it has many citations from the main people who lived and work in those years. I recommend it with great admiration for Peter Biskind. I'm already looking forward to read his analysis on the films of the 50's titled Seeing Is Believing: How Hollywood Taught Us to Stop Worrying and Love the Fifties.

Seeing Is Believing: How Hollywood Taught Us to Stop Worrying and Love the Fifties.

Sherlock Holmes un film de Guy Ritchie

First of all, the story of Sherlock Holmes has been brought to the screen so many times and by so many great directors (Buster Keaton, Billy Wilder) that for a long time nobody wanted to touch the myth. Anyhow, Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) was the chosen one to bring back with an allstar cast the greatest detective in London's History.

The movie opens with an action sequence planned to immerge immediately the viewer into the film. As well planned and spectacular as it is, the sequence destabilize us and we have to concentrate onto the charaters to understand what really goes on. The photography is really dark and we don't discern really well the actors in the shadows. I must say, that the film is pretty dark all the time and that sometimes it gives a good atmosphere for the scenes but other times it's just too dark.
After the first sequence where Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and Watson (Jude Law) capture Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) the film slows down a bit and the mise-en-scène of the story takes place. Lord Blackwood is hanged for black magic and murders. The real story starts when the body of Lord Blackwood disappears from his grave.

The big story of Sherlock Holmes is the investigation of the criminal that we all attend. Also, it has the subplots of love, friendship and stories that came before the main plot. The relationship between Holmes and Watson is interresting and really funny. They look like an old couple, well it's the classic friendship story with the jokes and the relations like The Sting or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The two main actors complete well each other and I must give a special mention to the vilain played by Mark Strong who was very credible.

Sherlock Holmes
is a funny film that is worth seing and that doesn't reinvent the genre but that refresh the quality of what a blockbuster has to present these days. The only thing that tickled me a little was the many action scenes that felt to me as too many even if they were well orchestrated... And where the hell did Sherlock Holmes learned Kung Fu!?!

A review by Michaël Parent
